Moving into a new apartment can be a tedious — and sometimes frustrating — process. But preparing in advance of the big day can help ensure that things go smoothly—and can spare you a headache. We’ve compiled some tips to get you organized both before and during the move.
Before Moving
-
Set up a time with the property manager to visit your future unit (or a model unit, if yours isn’t ready) so you can take measurements for furniture.
-
If some of your furniture won’t fit well into your new apartment, you can sell or donate it before moving. This also allows some time to shop for any new furniture you may need.
-
Go through your current place and do some de-cluttering. Get rid of anything you do not wish to take with you to your new apartment, which reduces how much you’ll need to pack and move.
-
As soon as possible, have the utilities and cable set up in your new apartment. It’s much easier to have that ready to go before moving day, so you can simply relax after the hard work.
-
Moving can be expensive. Luckily, you can save money by asking retailers for boxes instead of buying them. Many stores are happy to give you the boxes that shipments arrive in for free. Liquor store boxes, in particular, are great because they’re sturdy and divided, making them ideal for packing breakables.
-
Talk to your independent insurance agent about renters insurance so you’ll already be protected by the time you move in the first box.
During the Move
-
Whether you hire movers or enlist a few friends to help with the move, you should easily be able to tell them where boxes should go based on your marks or color-coded tape.
-
While boxes are being moved in, focus on wiping down the counters, lining the drawers/cabinets and other cleaning tasks. At the end of the day, you’ll have a livable space.
-
Many property managers will hand you a checklist so you can note any damages in the unit. Take your time to fill this out so you’re not held liable for preexisting damages when you move out.
